Emerging proposals for Solent Gateway 2 to increased capacity and support Britain’s major shipping lane [Deadline 31 December]
Solent Gateway is already an important part of the Port of Southampton and is at the heart of a proposed expansion on the reclaimed land between Marchwood and Hythe. The land sits on the opposite site of the River Test to the Port and allows for the best use of the existing Solent Gateway facilities.
The UK’s number one hub for deep sea trade and Britain’s gateway to European and global markets is located on the south coast at Southampton Port. With critical links to major shipping chains, the current space is now nearing capacity after what has been deemed a two-thousand-year journey to the scale of the port today.
As of now, Solent Gateway plays a key role in supporting jobs, trade and industry, both locally and across the UK.
ABP wishes to consult with the marketplace about the emerging proposals and the best possible ways to progress the design.
A public consultation was undertaken between 16 September and 13 October and more details on this can be found here: solentgateway2.co.uk/
Foundation principles for the project have been set out in eight key bullets:
1. To enhance the environment and green spaces
2. To provide resilient and safe port operations
3. To produce durable and adaptable design
4. To make efficient use of land
5. To support the transition to net zero in line with ABP’s wider aspiration to
reach net zero by 2040
6. To be a good neighbour and work collaboratively with stakeholders
7. To be sympathetic to local character and local history
8. To support innovation
Designs have been created to not only enable ABP to meet future demand, but also benefit local communities, the environment and wider nation.
Over half of the site has been set aside for environmental purposes with plans for a major new country park to enhance walking and cycling routes.
There will be improved resilience with a world-leading sustainable automotive terminal and marine facilities following ABP’s goal of providing essential gateways to enable the green infrastructure for energy transition.
All will be accessed by improved road access with plans for a direct connection from the A326.
A timeline has been set out with the next stage of consultation in 2026 and a goal to have final decisions by 2028.
